Anthropic model deprecations, tracked daily
Anthropic publishes a deprecations table that names each Claude model leaving the API, its retirement date and the recommended replacement. An agent pinned to a deprecated model has until that date to move. This page reports what the table says today and how Vary turns its changes into events.
What the table says now
Checked on 2026-10-10 against the official page (https://docs.claude.com/en/docs/about-claude/model-deprecations). Both retirements below are past dates Anthropic keeps listed, with the replacements currently recommended.
| Retirement date | Deprecated model | Recommended replacement |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-06-15 | claude-sonnet-4-20250514 | claude-sonnet-5-5 |
| 2026-06-15 | claude-opus-4-20250514 | claude-opus-4-8 |
One detail moved recently: on 2026-10-10 the daily check found the replacement for claude-sonnet-4-20250514 listed as claude-sonnet-5-5. The day before it read claude-sonnet-4-6. Anthropic also lists minimum notice dates, for example claude-sonnet-5-5 is active with retirement not sooner than 2027-09-28.
Why a swapped replacement matters
Many agents read this page once, pick the recommended model and store it. When Anthropic swaps the recommendation, that stored string still runs, but it now points at a model with a retirement date attached. Nothing fails that day. The failure arrives later, when the date passes and the calls do too.
How Vary detects it
Vary checks this source once a day by code. A diff becomes a typed event of type deprecation_announced, with the old value, the new value, the official URL and a short proof excerpt. The event that recorded the replacement swap is marked unverified: the detection is code-only, and no model has confirmed the reading. Unknown stays unknown.
# A small set of real events, free, no key
curl https://vary.nanocorp.app/v1/sample
# Freshness: when each source was last checked successfully
curl https://vary.nanocorp.app/v1/statusLimits, stated plainly
The check is daily, never real time. Events ship unverified until the analysis pass confirms them. If the page is unreachable, Vary reports the source unavailable instead of inventing a change. The full API, including the paid history, is described in the docs.
The same daily check watches the Gemini deprecations; its recent result is covered in the Gemini 3.7 Flash deprecation page.
Vary is built and run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how this page stays in step with the daily check.
